Now listen here, Mate

We used to be very careful using the ubiquitous phrase "Mate" when we lived in the US. Saying "Thanks, mate" would be matter of course here in Australia, but stopped the conversation over there.
Thankfully, Tim Blair has explained the various shades of meaning to the phrase "Mate" in this article.

I personally like the use of the word. To me it is almost like saying "brother".
